History and Hauntings 006 — Antietam

Walk the fields of Antietam, where one of the most devastating days in American military history unfolded on September 17, 1862.

Part of The Paranormal Life: History and Hauntings series, this design captures the solemn landscape of the battlefield at Sharpsburg, Maryland, including the Dunker Church, Burnside Bridge, Bloody Lane, artillery, split-rail fences, and ghostly Civil War soldiers emerging from the mist.

In roughly twelve hours of fighting, about 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or listed as missing, making Antietam the single bloodiest day in American military history. The battle became a major turning point in the Civil War and gave President Abraham Lincoln the opportunity to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

Today, the battlefield is remembered not only for its staggering human cost, but also for the many stories of unexplained voices, apparitions, and lingering presences reported across its historic ground.
